The Donation Process
1. Reception
Please show your donor card if you have donated before. Your details will print automatically on a new application form. Please read the note on "Before Donation."If you are a first time donor, please bring appropriate identification (passport, driver's license, student ID, health insurance card).
2. Questionnaire
Questions are designed to protect blood donors and transfusion recipients. At fixed sites, questions can be answered on a touch panel. At mobile sites, please mark your answers with a pencil.3. Medical Examination and Predonation Test
A doctor will check your questionnaire and measure your blood pressure.A hemoglobin test will determine if your red cell concentration is high enough to safely donate. The minimum value depends on the kind of blood donation.
For apheresis donation, platelet count is also measured.
4. Whole Blood and Apheresis Donation
Whole blood donation usually takes 5-10 minutes to fill a 200 mL or 400 mL bag. Apheresis donation uses a cell separator to collect plasma or platelets, and return the rest of the blood to the donor. The time depends on what is collected, but averages about 60 minutes. Apheresis donation is performed at blood centers and some donating rooms.
5. Rest
After donation is a rest period, with soft drinks for fluid replacement, and a small snack if you like. Please review Notes after blood donation. Your donor card will be updated with information for the next possible donation date.
