The Hokkaido Cord Blood Bank collects and processes placental and umbilical cord blood that would otherwise be discarded when a baby is born. Processed cord blood is rich in "hematopoietic stem cells" which can be transplanted to cure life-threatening diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, congenital immunodeficiency and other conditions.
